Some people exist, most people live, and
a few embrace life and live each day like it was their last. Melissa
Hensley not only embraced life, but was an example to all of us
of how life should be lived. June 26, 2007, her incredible journey
ended. There were so many things she loved. Her family, friends,
music, knitting, volunteer work, working with children, dog obedience,
agility, freestyle, herding, pet therapy, mystery novels, Star Trek,
blue Gatorade, hollow chocolate bunnies, Peeps, sweet potato muffins,
to name a few. But at the top of the list were Sherlock, Mystery,
Shandy, Spense, and Kinsey, her beloved furkids. As her best friend,
Susie, said, if you wanted to make Melissa happy, don't do something
for her, do something for her dogs. She always put them first.
To say Melissa was generous is an understatement.
She spent her life giving her time, money, and energy to others,
human and animal, to make their lives better. She was a constant
in a rapidly changing world. You always knew that Melissa would
be there to make life better. Even though she is not here on earth,
her spirit can still be felt. She will live on in all she touched.
We are all better people for having known her.
The Sheltie that introduced Melissa to
all of us and the world was Mystery, U-CD Jo-Lyn's Mysterious Treasure
UD, RN (x's 3), ASCA-CD, AX, AXJ, NAP, NJP, NAC-V, RV-N, HT, HCT,
CGC, TDIAOV, Bronze Bar Muscial Freestyle, Honorable Mention in
the First & Foremost System and Member of the Tennessee Animal Hall
of Fame. Never has there been such a team as Melissa and Mystery.
Mystery was beautiful, smart, sassy, and boy did she have fashion
sense! There has never been a Sheltie, never been any dog, that
looked as good in a hat as Mystery! And let us not forget her dresses.
OH MY!
Mystery adored Melissa as much as Melissa
adored her. Mystery would do anything for Melissa, as she would
for Mystery.
They were a dream team to watch in the
ring. But, with all of the titles, noting was more important to
them as touching the lives of children and the elderly. Mystery
would perform a Fire Safety Skit for the children in schools all
around their area. That skit is what put them in the Tennessee Animal
Hall of Fame. They went weekly to area nursing homes to help brighten
the days of people sometimes forgotten by the rest of the world.
And, most of all, they visited the Johnson City Children’s Hospital.
Many of the children were there for cancer treatments, some had
traumatic injuries, all needed the special care that only Mystery,
AKA Nurse Love, could provide.
It is sad when our beloved pet dies. It
is devastating when a pet outlives their owner. None of us thought
that we would have to say good-bye to Melissa before Mystery. But,
God works in mysterious ways, or as in this case, Mystery Ways.
I feel that God left Mystery to comfort those who Melissa left behind.
On March 8, 2008 Melissa called to Mystery, "Come dance with me,
the best is yet to be." Thank you, God, for Melissa and Mystery
and the memories and love they have left behind.
