In Utero Infections (Medical Information)
Earlier this year we had a puppy born that was normal in all respects until she turned 7 weeks old. At 7 weeks she started to show signs that indicated she wasn't well. Seizures, unable to eat, diarrea, vomitting, etc. Our vet thought initially that it was hypoglycemia in an older pup. She was treated with fluid therapy and antibiotics (injectibles and by mouth). 3 days after this treatment the problems again returned. This happened twice. I was at my wits end. I couldn't get food into this puppy and she was very ill. During this time I was running the VSS and notice a puppy entry in the Rainbow Bridge category. I contacted Amy Butcher regarding why this puppy had only lived 46 days. Imagine my surprise when she described EXACTLY what my puppy was going through. In Amy's case though her puppy was sent to the Bridge because they couldn't stop the problems. Necropsy showed that she had a system wide infection call inutero (from the womb). With this information I contacted my vet and we started every 2nd day anitibiotic injections. Within 2 weeks this puppy was healthy again. I delayed giving her her shots and worming, just in case. She was 10 weeks old when I finally gave her her first shots and wormed her. Amber was very ill for almost 3 weeks! She is totally healthy and a normal puppy in all respects. Testing indicates same. If not for the timely request of info from Amy Butcher - Amber's Guardian Angel, she wouldn't be here. I was ready to send her to the bridge too!
Amber is now our Islewind Mascot. Watch for her at the shows with us in the coming years. She's a 12.5" spitfire! If you would like further information on this please feel free to contact me.
