ISLEWIND HEAD STUDIES

Due to the popularity of my comments on choosing dog heads from birth, I've decided to develope this page to show how and why we pick heads of dogs. This page will be under construction for about a month while I go through all my puppy pics to place examples of good and not so good heads for this page.

Puppy Heads at Birth

These are newborn Puppy Heads -- of dogs that are now in the show ring. First is a Blue Merle male, second a sable male, third is a tricolour female. You should see a completely square muzzle, a definite stop at this point.

Notice these puppies heads are square but the muzzle isn't quite the depth of the ones on the left.

Puppy Heads at 1 Week

A Puppy Muzzle at one week, may or may not have a bump evident on the nose. But the uppper and lower jaw should be entirely square.

Notice how square the bottom muzzle is compared with the upper.

The muzzle should be a complete blunt wedge as the picture above and the drawing below indicates.

Picture

Puppy Heads at About 2 Weeks

Muzzle should still be full at this time.

Blunt wedge still evident, though nose is lengthing. Additionally, the nose bump should be disappearing and you should see the backskull flattening out.

Puppy Heads at About 3 Weeks

Eyes will have begun to open during the past week, the head should be very blunt wedge, with the upper and lower jaw still meeting very correctly. The less the muzzle is narrowing at this age the better.

This just about 3 week old puppy has a beautiful head, but, its a very LARGE head. He grew to about 17".

Puppy Heads at About 4 Weeks

Again we see the full muzzle, and a good wide muzzle as well. Narrowing at this age might begin, but, preference for the muzzle to remain wide and full.

This puppy has round eyes, and the muzzle is narrowing down already.

Puppy Heads at About 5-6 Weeks

At this age we look for a full rounded muzzle. The muzzle should be about the same depth still as the backskull.

The underjaw should still be full and complete like in this pup.

Notice this bitch puppies lower jaw juts out.... she had an overbite. She also has a huge head for 6 weeks. And did go oversize.

This puppy though he grew to be insize, shows lowset ears, round eyes, and a muzzle that is narrowing too fast.

Puppy Heads at About 7 Weeks

This is again one of upper puppies, he has grown cuter, his muzzle has narrowed more. His hound ears are now not noticeable, but, his round eye remains.

Puppy Heads at About 8 Weeks

Puppy Heads at About 10 Weeks

This bitch puppy from the same litter, shows the same nice head, without being oversized. Her body also is proportional to her head. Which the two shots on the left do not show.

These two boys are littermates.

They were grown out here, until 14-16 weeks, hoping against hope they would remain in size. Notice the upper dog with the huge head! The lower dog is extremely leggy. Both finished around 17".

Puppy Heads at 4 Months

This puppy shows an nice balanced head at 4 months. He does have a sliding stop and his muzzle isn't as full as most of us like it. He has nice almond shaped eyes as well.
